Making a change is one of the most important actions a leader needs to take.

The harsh truth is that if you are not delivering your objectives or your milestones, then it is best to act now. In our experience, things do not just sort themselves out with a bit more time.

Success comes from 20% strategy and 80% execution, so getting to the conclusions as fast as possible does make a big difference.

However, these are big calls that need to be thought through. So, if you are thinking about a strategy pivot and/or refocusing your execution plan, here are six key questions to consider…

  1. Are you clear on what you are trying to achieve, and do these plans align with customers and the market?
  2. What is your instinct and the data telling you about what needs to change?
  3. Are your team and your wider stakeholders aligned?
  4. Do you have the right resources? This goes beyond people — think about funding, capabilities and IT, too.
  5. Is your execution plan clear, measurable and executable?
  6. Are you up for it? This is the big question once you have worked out the rest.

Simple questions? Maybe so. But in our experience, getting to the answers by yourself is not so easy, and having the right support through this process can make a real difference.

At Barnett Walton Advisers, we have had to make these decisions ourselves, so we understand what is at stake. As advisers, we have sat alongside a number of great people throughout this process and seen the results that making these decisions can bring.

If you are unsure about any of these questions, we can help get you to the answers.
